This year the band played at the Forest Hills Golf Club's annual St. Georges Charity Concert which was held at the golf club's clubhouse on Sunday 19th April 2009. The band and the audience were full of St. Georges cheer, and of course the flag waving to Rule Britannia always helps. Our guest vocalist for the band was Mrs. Christine Turner. This was the programme the band played on the day.

TORQUAY REGIONAL AREA CONTEST
MARCH 09
The band had a very good weekend, but unfortunately it was not to be the band's day regarding the results. Having played well, the band came a lowly tenth place. Having worked hard at the test piece obviously this was a very disappointing result for us.
However, the band will continue to provide excellent music at it's concerts, and the band will endeavour to come back next year to rectify this years disappointing results at the area.
The band will also be competing at this years Weston-Super-Mare contest in May and the Wychavon Festival Contest in September also.

BACK TO WINNING WAYS AGAIN!
31/12/2009

Cinderford Band were back to there winning ways again, when they took the 2nd Section crown by winning at the 41st Weston Entertainments Contest on Sunday 18th May 2009. The contest was held at the Winter Gardens at Weston-Super-Mare Pavilion.
The band dominated the field with a fine display on stage. This was also added by the Fred Trego Memorial Trophy for the Best Euphonium Award, and this was given to our very own Anthony Murrell as best of the section. In all there was seven band's in total in our section, and the band came 1st with 187 points by taking "The Bailey Trophy".
In second place there was City of Bristol with 186 points, and third place was Phoenix Brass with 185 points.
The adjudicator for the 2nd section was Mr Steve Pritchard-Jones, who in his mind picked "a well deserved win" for Cinderford.
Well done to all involved in making this a great success for the band. It was going to happen sooner or later, and it was great for it to happen at a new contest that the band has not visited for a long time.

PASSING OF A FRIEND
1st September 2009

Mr Bill Jarret
It is with great sadness that the Cinderford Band announces the passing of its former Musical Director, Mr William (Bill) Jarret, on Sunday 30th August, 2009. Bill had suffered a long illness with the greatest of dignity and humour and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Before moving to Monmouth, Bill had been the Musical Director of the Romford Band and the Red Triangle Operatic Society, as well as the founder conductor of the Havering Youth Band and one of the tutors to the London and Home Counties Youth Band when it was first formed by the Brass Band Regional Association.
Bill had a lifelong involvement with music making as an instrumentalist, singer, and conductor. In his native Scotland he was recognised as a talented boy soprano, winning many awards at festivals and other competitions, which led to his being in demand for oratorio and secular music performances throughout the North East Region, and later as a principal in musical theatre, having developed a strong baritone voice, an experience which was to lead to a new conducting career in that medium in later life.
However it was his early involvement in brass band circles which provided the bedrock on which his love of bands and the style of music was founded. He was taught to play cornet by his uncle, the solo euphonium of the Arbroath Instrumental Band, which Bill joined aged seven in order to have a common hobby with his father who had returned home at the end of the Second World War. Soon the desire to play trombone became very strong and Bill studied the instrument, initially with John Boyle, then with the legendary John Faulds who conducted the trombones of Barry, Ostler, and Shepherd Band to world champion status in quartet competitions. By the age of eleven Bill had become principal trombone and the band entered a purple patch becoming Scottish Champions through the sections and reaching Championship Section.
A three year spell with Charlton Athletic as a professional footballer interrupted the serious business of brass banding but this resumed immediately on his return to Scotland.
Bill moved to London with his wife, Sheila, and young daughter to take up a position with Ford Motor Company in furtherance of his career. This led to his joining the Romford band to play solo trombone for fellow Scot John Anderson. During his time there, Bill founded and conducted the Havering Youth band (many of the younger members becoming age-range solo champions) as a feeder organisation for the senior band and within four years took over as Musical Director of the Romford Band which was then in the second section. Bill conducted the Romford Band for over 10 years during which time they achieved many concert and contest successes including that of gaining Championship status for the first time in their 60 year history in 1984. Bill had endless energy and during his time in Romford, he also took on the Musical Director’s role for the Operatic Society, following many years of collaboration in joint concerts with that organisation.
In 1984 Bill and Sheila moved to Monmouth, which saw the start of his long and proud association with the Cinderford Band; firstly as a Trombone player and then much later on Tenor Horn, Bass, Percussion (basically wherever he was needed). Bill became totally involved with the band management, first as contest secretary, then serving for many years as Chairman. Bill’s playing career came to an abrupt end following the after-effects of laser surgery on his left eye, and for a year he was unable to take part in any musical activity.
Late in 2002 the band invited Bill to take over the Musical Director’s position, which he took to with his usual trademarks of musicality, enthusiasm, motivation and total commitment. He set a policy of injecting new music into the concert programmes, as well as visiting Cinderford’s vast library of music to unearth previously unplayed gems; both for contrast and vitality. Many of Bill’s own arrangements also found their way into the band’s repertoire and were greatly appreciated by audiences far and wide. Bill gave his services freely for which Cinderford Band will always be in his debt.
Bill retired from conducting in September 2006 due to his illness and he was voted an honorary life member in recognition of his services to the band. He continued to support and visit the band’s rehearsals, concerts and contests, offering his candid advice and wisdom but always with his usual good humour and wit.
We all know that Bill will go to a better place, convinced that he will be playing in the Premier League and conducting Black Dyke Mill’s band; as well as keeping a watchful eye on all of us.
Bill will be sadly missed by everyone associated with the Cinderford Band and those who knew him. We have lost a most valued member, supporter and a dear friend. Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to Sheila and the family.

2008 SUMMER CONCERTS

The summers concerts for the Band have started very well, with a number of concerts already completed
Sanders Park, Bromsgrove
Sunday 18th May started the concerts off for 2008 with a trip down to Bromsgrove Park. This is a great park, and with a good audience made this concert a great day out. Although it was dry, it was very cold so the traditional request of the band to take there jackets off for the second half was quickly forgotten. Our programme catered for all ages from traditional marches, easy listening music like Greensleeves through to Jurassic Park and Oliver and with plenty of solo spots a wide range of music was catered for. The band has been playing at this venue for a few years now, and we always enjoy coming back. The music program was as follows:
ARMY OF THE NILE
LIGHT CALVARY
ZELDA
VALSE ESPAGNA
DISNEY FANTASY
LARK IN THE CLEAR AIR
JURASSIC PARK
FROLIC FOR TROMBONES
CROSS OF HONOUR
INTERVAL

The Rising Sun, Moseley Green, Parkend, Lydney
A annual visit to the local always sounds a good idea, but on this occasion the band visited this local watering hole in the forest for there summer concert. The Rising Sun has always established itself being a traditional summer venue for all the local brass band's in the area. The picturesque area added to the ambience of a quality musical programme from our musical director Mr Clive Lewis. The band played numerous items for all tastes, which was very well received with varied music for all ages. We hope to see you all there next year again.
Abbey Park, Evesham

A visit to Evesham is always a pleasure, with several possible visits to this lovely Town a possibility, with the Wychavon Music Festival being held here on average every two years in which the band competes at this contest.
As you can see above it is a traditional bandstand, like many other parks have in which we play in. This particular park is set in lovely surroundings next to the river Avon, and is very popular with tourists.
The day was a scorcher, which always helps and with a good sized crowd listening made this an extra special day out. The band started playing in line with tradition with a rousing march

Torquay March 2008

The band travelled to Torquay after much hard work over the Winter months, to try and claim a good position in the Annual Area Contest at the Torquay Riviera Centre. The test piece was "The Circumnavigator" by James Cook.
The band travelled down early on Saturday 8th March to Torquay with high hopes, and we arrived at our designated Hotel. After unloading all the instruments and kit, and collecting our keys to our rooms, it was down to business. We had a rehearsal and awaited our draw for the contest.
"Would you believe it" was cried around the band, as once again we were drawn first to take to the stage. The band played very well on stage and we awaited our results which was at the end of the day.
Unfortunately for the band, the day did not go our way again for us and we had a very unexpected last place awarded to us. The band obviously were very upset, but even more determined than ever to do well next year.

The band then settled into the Hotel with a few good beers and very good meal, that was organised by the band and hotel for all of us to enjoy together. Apart from the result, we all had a good time and all agreed to put this behind us and to concentrate on our forthcoming engagements.

The Fundraising Committee had organised a sponsored walk starting at the Beechenhurst Lodge, Speech House on Saturday 25th August 2007. The walk in the beautiful Forest of Dean departed on the Sculpture Trail, which took in all the new sculptures from the forest. The band's gave a great turnout and with a barbecue and games after the walk, and yes a few drinks everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. This was a great event that we all enjoyed and money donated on the day and collected exceeded our expectations. We all look forward to our next event and thank you to all that helped on the day to make this a great success.
The money that was raised through this event will go towards the Academy Band's new uniform. Watch this space for more details.

The Band was unfortunate in it's result held at Torquay this year with the band coming a disappointed 11th place at the Area qualifiers. However the band had an enjoyable weekend and the result did not dampen the spirits of the players with great weather as you can see from the picture above which always helps.. The supporters also enjoyed themselves and gave great support up to and during the competition. On behalf of Cinderford Band I would like to thank Clive Lewis for all his hard work in rehearsals in a short period of time since taking the band, and also I would like to thank Grindles Coaches for there support in the transport to and from the venue.
Pictures of the weekend will be added to our gallery in due course. The committee would like to thank all players and support staff for there hard work in organising and commitment during this time.
The Cinderford Band will now concentrate on the busy forthcoming concert season which will incorporate a summer concert at the five acres college, Coleford. More details will follow very shortly. We would like to congratulate all local band's that have qualified for the finals and wish them every success in the finals.

The members of Cinderford Band are on a high after winning the prestigious Wychavon Entertainment contest by 4 clear points on Sunday the 17th September. They managed to beat many bands from the North West, Midlands and Wales to take 1st prize.
The band’s chairman Anthony Murrell was delighted by the success and said this result reflects the culmination of a lot of hard work through the year by all the members, committee, musical director Bill Jarret and professional conductor Dave Lea.
The band played an entertaining 20 minute programme to suit all musical tastes. The opening march “The Waltonian” got everything off to a flying start, with images of the Big Top and trapeze artists. This was followed by “Napoli” (Funiculi, Funicula), a cornet solo that is fiendishly difficult to play, however the band’s principal cornet Mr Philip Turner gave a brilliant rendition. The band then changed the mood entirely, with a very solemn and expressive performance of Kenneth Downie’s arrangement of “In Perfect Peace”. To end the programme the band chose to play the very exciting finale from Tchaikovsky’s 2nd symphony which uses melodic themes borrowed from Ukrainian folksong, commonly referred to as the “Little Russian”. This tour de force for band had the audience on the edge of their seats and brought the programme to a successful close.
It was clear that both the audience and the adjudicator Mr Brian Buckley had enjoyed the band’s programme. In his summary, Mr Buckley stated there was a clear winner today and he awarded the band 192 points, which was 4 points clear of the second placed band, he also awarded the band with the prize for the best percussion section delighting Rikki Miller and Gareth Davies.

The Cinderford Band is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Clive Lewis as their new Musical Director following the retirement of Mr Bill Jarret. The band has made a lot of progress under Bill, and he leaves the band on a real high after winning the Wychavon 1st Section entertainment contest by 4 clear points! The band would like to publicly record its sincere thanks to Bill for all his hard work and dedication over many years.
The band is now looking forward to exciting times ahead under Clive who is renowned for his entertaining concert programmes and he fully intends to maintain this tradition and ensure the band retains its status as one of the top bands in the area.
Chairman, Anthony Murrell says the band has a very bright future under Clive. He is a highly respected musician and teacher across the Forest of Dean. Clive has been a member of the band for over 25 years and he has many years of successful experience behind him both as a player, teacher and conductor.
Talking with Clive, he is very excited about the future and having the opportunity to conduct such a talented group of local musicians. He is already busy preparing programmes for the Armistice and Christmas concerts. Clive plans to feature the Training Academy Band at the Christmas concert on the 2nd December at the Wesley Chapel. This band has made fantastic progress under his guidance since the group was formed in May, with over 20 new members. They are really enjoying themselves both musically and socially and this was evidenced at their very successful summer school held at Soudley, where they gave their first concert performance. Clive believes some of these players will soon be challenging for positions in the senior band, so the future looks very bright indeed.
The Cinderford Band is always looking to strengthen its ranks and offers a warm welcome to anyone interested in joining them.
Clive would be very interested to hear from any cornet players or other instrumentalists interested in becoming a member of the band and he can be contacted on 01594 843966.
